Google Photos has taken its photo-editing capabilities a step further with the introduction of Ultra HDR editing, bringing enhanced brightness and color to users’ smartphones. The new feature, which is now available in the app’s Adjust section, uses a relatively new image format developed by Google.
Ultra HDR editing can make photos appear brighter and more vibrant, capturing more details than traditional HDR effects. However, it also reduces the file size of images compared to JPEGs and allows for viewing on non-HDR devices.
To use the feature, users simply need to tap the Ultra HDR option, adjust its strengths with a slider, and apply the enhancements to their photos. The edited images will retain their originality unless excessive adjustments are made.
When viewed on non-HDR devices or operating systems without support for the format, Ultra HDR images appear normally, excluding any enhanced features. To identify if an image is in Ultra HDR, users can swipe up on the photo and view its details page, where the “Ultra HDR” label will be displayed alongside the pixel count.
This new feature highlights Google’s ongoing efforts to improve its editing tools and enhance smartphone photography capabilities.
