Chobani to Build $1.2 Billion Food Production Hub in Rome, NY

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that Chobani will break ground on a massive natural foods plant in Rome, creating over 1,000 jobs and investing $1.2 billion in the area. The facility, located on a 150-acre parcel at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park, will be the largest natural food manufacturing investment in American history.

The plant, which will produce over 1 billion pounds of dairy products annually, will also enable Chobani to increase its purchasing of raw milk from dairy farms in New York, reaching an estimated 6 billion pounds per year. The facility will feature up to 28 production lines and process over 12 million pounds of milk daily.

Chobani’s decision to build the plant in Rome was driven by the area’s skilled workforce, including a high concentration of local veterans and graduates from area colleges. The company also cited the site’s easy access to population centers and affordable housing options as key factors in its choice.

The project is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Oneida County, with officials estimating that it will create over 1,000 good-paying jobs. Chobani has promised to work with local organizations to develop workforce training programs for underserved populations, helping to drive economic growth and development in the region.

“This public-private partnership will grow the market for New York’s dairy farmers, create jobs that provide a path to the middle class, and develop world-class food products,” said Hope Knight, President of Empire State Development.
