Pope Francis’s death has sparked both sadness and admiration from around the world. As a practicing homosexual who supports abortion rights, my feelings towards him were complicated, but ultimately simple – an unyielding respect for his unwavering support of migrants, refugees, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
Francis’s leadership was marked by a radical commitment to social justice, one that was often misunderstood or dismissed by critics. He was a voice for the marginalized and vulnerable, advocating for their rights without apology. In contrast to the harsh rhetoric from some politicians, Francis’s message of kindness and compassion is more than just a gesture – it’s a call to action.
The Catholic Church has been criticized for its complicated history and sometimes contentious stance on issues like abortion and LGBTQ+ rights. However, Francis’s approach was refreshingly different. He reminded us that faith should be about serving others, not elevating oneself above them. His words echoed the values of the faith he represented: the meek would inherit the earth, it is immoral to be wealthy while others starve, and we ought to follow in the footsteps of a man who said, “All those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
As we remember Pope Francis’s life and legacy, let us hold onto his message of kindness and compassion. In a world that often seems dominated by spite and authoritarianism, his example is more than just inspiring – it’s a beacon of hope for a better future.
