Abbas Demands Hamas Disarm and Release Hostages to End Gaza War

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has called on Hamas to disarm, relinquish power, and release hostages in a bid to end the ongoing war in Gaza. Abbas stated that by releasing the hostages, Hamas would “shut down” Israel’s excuses for continuing the conflict, which began after the terror group’s massacre on October 7, 2023.

The PA leader emphasized the need to stop the war of extermination in Gaza, where hundreds are being killed every day. He also criticized Hamas, calling them “sons of dogs.” This is not the first time Abbas has made such a demand, but it marks a significant shift in his approach since the start of the conflict.

It’s unclear whether Hamas will comply with Abbas’ demands, despite the potential benefits for ending the war and saving Palestinian lives. The PA and Hamas have been at odds for nearly two decades, with Israel also criticizing the PA’s “pay for slay” policy, which Abbas reformed in February.
