Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has acknowledged US conditions for lifting sanctions, saying his government is open to cooperation with Russia and Turkey on military support. Sharaa’s government is negotiating with Turkey and Russia regarding their military presence in Syria, aiming to secure military backing from these countries.
In talks with the US, Sharaa must rebuild a war-torn country, convince the West of his reliability despite past ties to al-Qaeda, and navigate complex geopolitical tensions between regional powers. He has demanded the extradition of former President Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia after his regime fell.
The US has imposed severe sanctions on the Assad government, including UN sanctions targeting Sharaa and his group. The US has set eight conditions for lifting sanctions, including destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles and cooperation in counterterrorism. Sharaa has said some conditions “need to be discussed or modified.”
A key issue is the fate of thousands of foreign fighters who have assisted Sharaa’s government. Some have held positions within the new government, but Western countries press for their removal as a condition for easing sanctions. Sharaa hinted at granting Syrian citizenship to long-resident foreign fighters who “stood by the revolution,” but this proposal raises concerns about Syria becoming a haven for extremists.
Sharaa has sought to reassure Western countries that his country will prevent the use of Syrian territory to threaten any other nation, committing to preventing acts of revenge.
