US Drone Shot Down by Houthis Amid Ongoing Yemen Conflict

Houthi rebels claim to have shot down a US drone in northwest Yemen, amid a series of US airstrikes on various locations across the country. The group’s spokesman said their air defense systems took out the MQ-9 Reaper drone while it was carrying out attacks in the Hajjah governorate.

The latest strike is the seventh US drone downed by the Houthis this month, and the 22nd since Israel’s war on Gaza began last year. Al Masirah, a Houthi-affiliated outlet, reported that strikes targeted Kamran Island, the Al Salif district in western Yemen, and the Al-Saleem district in the Saada province.

The US has been carrying out near-daily air attacks against what it claims are Houthi targets, killing over 200 people since March. The administration warned that its military campaign will continue until the Houthis halt all firings against vessels in the Red Sea.

The Houthis reject the US assault, saying they target ships in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and will stop when Israel ends its war on the enclave. This latest attack comes days after 12 people were killed in air strikes conducted by the US on Yemen’s capital Sanaa.

Since November last year, the Houthis have launched over 100 attacks on vessels linked to Israel, in response to Israel’s war on Gaza. The group has halted attacks during a two-month ceasefire but pledged to resume strikes after Israel renewed its assault on Gaza last month.
