Oblivion Remastered, the reimagined version of Bethesda’s 2006 RPG, has left many fans and industry experts in awe. According to senior game designer Bruce Nesmith, who worked on the original, the remaster is so impressive that it doesn’t do justice to its own name. “I was assuming this was going to be a texture update,” Nesmith said. “But to completely redo the animations, the animation system, put in the Unreal Engine, change the leveling system, and change the user interface… That’s, you’re touching every part of the game.”
The changes made to Oblivion Remastered range from minor visual tweaks to fundamental gameplay overhauls. The addition of a new sprint mechanic and alterations to the leveling system have many feeling that this is more of a remake than a remaster. Nesmith agrees, saying “That’s a staggering amount of work” – it almost needs its own word.
Bethesda has explained that their focus was on maintaining the experience players know and love while modernizing it for newcomers. The studio stated in a social media post that they never intended to remake Oblivion, but rather to preserve its essence while making it accessible to new players.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with an expansive Interactive Map, complete Walkthroughs, and more.
