The highly anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 was marred by chaos, with shoppers reporting issues with preorders that left them frustrated. Websites crashed, inventory vanished, and buyers faced technical difficulties, including checkout errors and payment glitches.
Preorders for the new gaming system officially opened at midnight ET across several major retailers, but many were met with disappointment when they found that the console and bundles had sold out quickly. Some shoppers were able to complete their purchases, while others were left waiting or met with error messages.
GameStop’s preorder went live at 11 am, but both the console and Mario Kart World Bundle sold out within minutes. eBay resale listings for the new console have also appeared, with some selling for upwards of $700.
Nintendo has warned that preorders from the My Nintendo Store could be delayed due to high demand. The company received “an extremely large number” of preorder applications ahead of April 24, approximately 2.2 million people in Japan alone.
The Switch 2 is set to officially launch on June 5, 2025, and it boasts a range of new features, including a larger display, newly designed Joy-Con controllers, and improved storage capacity. However, the console’s prices remain unchanged at $449.99 for the standalone model and $499.99 for the Nintendo Switch 2 console and game bundle.
For those eagerly awaiting the launch of the Switch 2, it remains to be seen how Nintendo will manage the demand for its new console, which is expected to be highly competitive in the gaming market.
