The US military has been conducting hundreds of airstrikes in Yemen since mid-March, with a renewed campaign that shows no signs of stopping. The strikes have killed at least 74 people and injured many more, according to satellite imagery. This escalation marks a significant escalation in the conflict, which has seen the Houthis, backed by Iran, resist years of attacks from a Saudi-led coalition.
The US military’s strategy is focused on air power, with drones playing a key role in the strikes. However, despite this focus, the Houthis have managed to survive and even thrive in the face of repeated attacks. The group has used civilian casualties as a rallying cry for recruitment and support.
Analysts warn that without sustained ground operations, the Houthis will continue to recover from losses and rebuild their capabilities. The Pentagon’s chief weapons buyer recently described the Houthis’ arsenal as becoming increasingly sophisticated.
The US military is now conducting air operations with two aircraft carriers in the region, with footage showing Super Hornet, Growler, and Hawkeye warplanes at work. However, the Houthis have also shot down several drones, including MQ-9 Reapers that cost tens of millions of dollars.
As the operation continues, the US military is watching for a potential update on the strategy from Pentagon officials, who last provided a briefing on March 17.
