A recent poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research has found that most Americans believe President Donald Trump’s tariffs will lead to higher prices, with nearly half saying they expect a significant increase in prices. The poll, which surveyed 1,260 adults, shows that Americans are becoming increasingly skeptical of Trump’s approach to trade and the economy.
About 52% of respondents said they were against imposing tariffs on all goods brought into the US from other countries, indicating a growing opposition to Trump’s trade policies. Additionally, nearly half of adults are “extremely” or “very” concerned about the possibility of the US economy going into a recession in the next few months.
The poll also found that 4 in 10 Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy and trade negotiations, which is roughly the same level of approval as three months ago. However, many respondents expressed concerns about the impact of tariffs on everyday life, with 6 in 10 saying Trump has “gone too far” when it comes to imposing new tariffs.
As the US economy remains solid for now, with moderating inflation and a healthy unemployment rate, Americans are bracing for possible disruptions due to Trump’s trade policies. The poll suggests that skepticism about tariffs is increasing, which could pose problems for a president who promised voters he could quickly fix inflation.
