American golfer Cameron Young shot an impressive eight-under-par 64 to take a two-shot lead after the opening round of the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. The 27-year-old’s bogey-free performance left compatriot Justin Thomas in his wake, with Scottie Scheffler three shots behind.
Defending champion Scheffler struggled to keep pace with Young’s consistent play, while Akshay Bhatia and Patrick Cantlay shared a spot at five under par. Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg also sat three shots off the lead alongside Theegala.
Tiger Woods, who was expected to participate in the tournament, did not show up due to his limited competitive schedule. However, Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre and an American trio of Keegan Bradley, Sam Burns, and Nick Dunlap shared eighth place.
Young attributed his success to feeling comfortable with his driver and making key putts early in the game. The 2022 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year is now looking to win a PGA title for the first time.
