Researchers say that smoking, heavy drinking, and a lack of exercise can trigger serious health problems as early as age 36. This finding is supported by studies tracking the health of hundreds of children born in 1959 until they were 61. Celebrities like Adele, Emma Stone, Lily Collins, and Glen Powell are among those who fall into this age bracket.
According to Dr. Tiia Kekäläinen of Laurea University in Finland, “Our findings highlight the importance of tackling risky health behaviours as early as possible to prevent damage from building up over the years.” The study found that bad habits in youth can lead to poor mental and physical health later in life.
The impact was particularly evident for those who indulged in unhealthy habits over longer periods. Smoking was mainly linked to poor mental health, while a lack of exercise was associated with poor physical health. Heavy alcohol consumption was linked to declines in both mental and physical health.
The researchers point out that bad habits and ill health are probably two-way – depression and physical problems may lead to drinking, smoking, and immobility. However, the study’s results are most applicable to people born in the late 1950s and early 60s.
