Microsoft’s Recall Feature Finally Ready for Widespread Use

Microsoft’s highly-anticipated Recall feature is now available across its AI-enabled PC line, after months of delays and significant security changes. The company announced that the feature, which takes frequent snapshots of a user’s screen to help them find anything they’ve ever seen on their computer, is part of a free downloadable update for all Copilot+ PCs.

The update includes various AI-powered improvements, including enhanced Windows Search functionality and a “click to do” feature that allows users to summarize or refine text with a single click. Recall was initially met with concerns over its potential safety and privacy risks but has undergone significant changes, including requiring biometric authentication and encrypting user data.

Users can now opt-in to use the feature in specific apps, giving them more control over when and how Recall is applied. Microsoft acknowledges that the delay may have cost it some momentum, but the company believes that its work on improving Recall will fuel other AI features in the future. The update demonstrates a significant shift towards locally-run models, which has increased in capability over time.

Microsoft’s history of adapting to major shifts in the tech industry has prepared the company for what is likely to be one of the biggest technology revolutions in three decades.
