Bladder Cancer Misdiagnosis: Warning Symptoms of a Deadly Disease

A 50-year-old UK father, Chris Cotton, was misdiagnosed with urinary tract infections (UTIs) for months, only to be diagnosed with terminal bladder cancer after ignoring his symptoms. The mistake cost him two years of potential life.

Chris had been experiencing pain while urinating and frequent trips to the bathroom, which he initially thought were signs of a UTI. He drank cranberry juice and was prescribed antibiotics, which seemed to work temporarily. However, months later, his symptoms returned, and after multiple doctors failed to find the cause, Chris sought specialist care.

Further tests revealed that Chris had muscle-invasive bladder cancer, with a 10cm tumour removed from his bladder. Unfortunately, the cancer had spread to his pelvic lymph nodes and a blood vessel near the bladder, making it incurable.

Chris urges others not to dismiss early symptoms of bladder cancer as UTIs or other infections. He warns that ignoring these symptoms can have devastating consequences. Bladder cancer is linked to smoking and affects men three times more often than women. Symptoms include blood in urine, painful urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, incontinence, and abdominal pain.
