Pirates! The Penzance Musical Revival Brings New Orleans Vibe to Broadway

The Pirate King, a swashbuckling musical, has arrived on Broadway with a fresh twist. Adapted from W.S. Gilbert’s 1880 operetta “The Pirates of Penzance,” Rupert Holmes’ modernized version boasts a lively New Orleans setting and jazz-inspired score.

The show follows Frederic, a young pirate who must choose between his loyalty to the sea and following the law as he turns 21. But when his former nurse, Ruth, discovers an old secret, the plot thickens. The production features Scott Ellis’ direction, Warren Carlyle’s energetic dances, and a talented cast, including Ramin Karimloo, Nick Barasch, Jinkx Monsoon, and David Hyde Pierce.

Pierce’s performance as Major-General is a standout, showcasing his rapid-fire patter and brilliant comedic timing. The supporting cast delivers equally impressive performances, from Samantha Williams’ sassy Mabel to Preston Truman Boyd’s tap-dancing extravaganza.

The modern world’s stress is tempered by the show’s infectious energy and music, which blends Sullivan’s operetta with Broadway jazz. With its brightly colored set and lively atmosphere, “Pirates! The Penzance Musical” is a delightful model of a modern operettical.
