Light Movement Linked to 25% Lower Cancer Risk

A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that incorporating light movement throughout the day can significantly lower an individual’s risk of developing cancer. The research, which analyzed data from 85,000 adults in the U.K., discovered a 26 percent lower risk of cancer among those with high daily physical activity.

The study revealed that people who took at least 7,000 steps per day had an 11 percent lower cancer risk compared to those who took only 5,000 steps. The risk decreased further for those taking 9,000 steps or more per day. Dr. Jack Jacoub and Dr. Roberto M. Benzo emphasize the importance of daily physical activity in reducing cancer risk.

While specific exercise types were not tracked, researchers found that light- and moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity every day was associated with a lower cancer risk compared to sedentary individuals. The findings suggest that even low-level activities like walking or doing daily chores can contribute significantly to cancer prevention.

Experts recommend incorporating more movement into your daily routine, regardless of intensity or duration. Dr. Jacoub stresses the importance of staying physically active in lowering cancer risk. “Every movement counts,” he says.
