Ukraine Hit by Russian Air Attacks as Easter Ceasefire Ends

Russia launched a new barrage of deadly air attacks on Ukraine as the Easter ceasefire came to an end, killing at least three people and wounding several in the southern region of Kherson. The US is pushing for a deal between Moscow and Kyiv to end the three-year conflict, with the latest proposal including recognition of Russian control of Crimea.

The surprise truce was called by Vladimir Putin, but both sides accused each other of violating it. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces broke the ceasefire nearly 3,000 times since its start, while Russia claimed Ukraine breached it over 1,000 times.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that the US would move on from efforts to bring peace to Ukraine if there were no signs of progress. President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about a deal between Russia and Ukraine, but his administration is planning further talks with Moscow.

The proposal includes a ceasefire along the front lines and recognition of Russian control of Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014. However, Ukrainian officials have said they will not recognize any occupied territories as Russian.

Ukraine’s Armed Forces vowed to comply with orders to limit fire on Russia’s army but would respond if fired on first. The conflict has continued since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with no pauses in fighting.
