Sebastian Padrón, an ice cream maker, remembered how close Francis felt to him and his family. The pope’s love for dulce de leche ice cream made it his favorite treat. Padrón recalled that Francis often gave gifts to his children and had a notorious sweet tooth.
Pope Francis’ decision to live in a humble hotel room instead of the lavish papal apartments spoke to his aversion to luxury. He would often visit stores, buying everything from shoe insoles to classical music recordings. His kind nature was evident in his smiles and friendly demeanor.
Tailor Raniero Mancinelli recalled selling Francis a cardinal’s sash before he became pope. When Francis questioned the price, Mancinelli told him, “You’re a bit of a thief, you’re a bit expensive.” The rest of Francis’ scarlet outfit was a hand-me-down from his predecessor.
Francis also visited Luca Spiezia’s optician shop in Rome’s historic center. To the surprise of the owner and his father, the pope introduced himself as “Francesco” without using his title. When offered new glasses, Francis declined, opting for new lenses instead.
