A’s Las Vegas Ballpark Construction Set for Major Milestone

The construction of the Athletics’ new ballpark in Las Vegas is expected to take a major step forward Thursday, when the 30-year lease and non-relocation documents are likely to be approved by the Las Vegas Stadium Authority. The $1.75 billion cost, an increase of $250 million from the original estimate, was driven by inflation and design changes that added 70,000 square feet.

Nevada and Clark County are providing $380 million in public funds for a 30,000-seat stadium with a capacity of 33,000. The team’s owner, John Fisher, has pledged an additional $100 million from his family’s money, bringing the total to $1.1 billion. U.S. Bank and Goldman Sachs will offer a $300 million loan.

The documents are seen as a major hurdle before construction can begin in the spring on a stadium projected to open for the start of the 2028 season. The ballpark features under-seat cooling and is designed to provide maximum fan comfort.

Steve Hill, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, expressed confidence that the agreements will be approved, saying “we have been through drafts of all the outstanding documents at this point a number of times over a long period of time, and so I think the questions have been answered.”
