A person visiting Kaiser Permanente’s Lakewood facility on Saturday may be at risk of measles, after a recently confirmed case. The patient, who traveled to Mexico and contracted the virus, visited the clinic between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that there have been over 29,000 cases nationwide this year.
Symptoms of measles can appear within seven to 21 days after exposure, including a fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. People who get vaccinated may still contract the virus, but are less likely to spread it. Health officials urge those exposed to monitor themselves for symptoms and call ahead before seeking medical care.
Colorado has reported five confirmed cases of measles this year, with four linked to travel to Mexico. The state has seen a significant increase in measles cases, with 29 states reporting over 884 cases nationwide. This is more than triple the number of cases last year.
