Trump Updates Biden’s Robo-Car Crash Reporting Rule to Benefit Tesla

The Biden-era rule requiring automakers and tech companies to report crashes involving fully or partially autonomous vehicles has been updated, removing a requirement to report some crashes involving vehicles with Level 2 systems. The change is likely to have a significant impact on one company – Tesla.

Under the revised Automated Vehicle Framework, companies are required to document collisions when an automated driving system was in use within 30 seconds of impact and report those incidents to the government. However, the new rule streamlines reporting for vehicles with Level 2 driver-assist systems that don’t result in a tow-away or injury, exempting them from reporting.

Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features are considered Level 2 driver assist systems, and the company has long complained about the crash-reporting rule. The new rule eliminates all reports of non-fatal crashes involving Tesla vehicles with Level 2 systems.

Safety advocates express concern over the changes, stating that transparency and accountability about vehicle performance on public roadways is essential. However, officials argue that the streamlined reporting requirements will enable AV manufacturers to develop faster while advancing safety.
