A routine circumcision procedure has turned into a living nightmare for a Long Island newborn and his family. Cole Jordan Groth, born on March 31 at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, was recovering well from an initial heart procedure and scheduled to go home on April 16. However, complications from the circumcision performed on April 14 have left him with severe organ damage.
According to his father, Tim Groth, the procedure took place on the night shift at 11 p.m. and severe bleeding that followed went unaddressed for over seven hours, resulting in Cole losing nearly half his blood volume. When Tim’s wife arrived at the hospital the next morning, she found their son pale, cold to the touch, and in critical condition.
Multiple surgeries have revealed sections of dead intestine that required removal. Cole has also shown signs of encephalopathy on EEG readings, potentially indicating brain injury from oxygen deprivation. The family is now facing an uncertain future for their newborn son as they deal with the devastating impact of this medical mistake.
The Groths had been told early in pregnancy about their son’s heart condition, but were assured there was reason to believe he would live a normal life. Instead, Cole faces numerous additional operations, including intestinal repairs and heart procedures. “His body has been through war,” Tim Groth said, explaining that sections of Cole’s intestines have died and had to be removed.
The situation has devastated the entire family, causing emotional trauma and affecting the mother’s breast milk production. Community support has poured in for a GoFundMe campaign related to Cole’s care, with over $50,000 contributed so far. The primary goal is to create “a campaign of strength in numbers” and prompt meaningful changes in patient care.
