A missile launched from Yemen was intercepted in the early hours of Saturday before crossing into Israeli territory, according to the Israeli military. Sirens sounded in multiple areas of Israel following the launch, and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Houthis said they fired a ballistic missile towards Nevatim Airbase in southern Israel. The group’s military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, stated that the attack was in response to intensified US strikes against them launched in mid-March. The US strikes have left dozens dead and were aimed at countering Houthi threats against Red Sea shipping linked to the Gaza conflict.
The Houthis have pledged to expand their range of targets in Israel in retaliation for a renewed Israeli onslaught in Gaza since last month. They had previously disrupted shipping in the Red Sea by launching over 100 attacks, claiming solidarity with Gaza’s Palestinians.
