The weekend box office has seen a surge, with ticket sales up over 120% compared to the same frame last year. Warner Bros.’ Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, is leading the charge, easily staying No.1 domestically with a phenomenal $45 million.
The film boasts one of the smallest second-weekend declines for any movie opening above $40 million since 2009’s Avatar, at just 6% off its opening weekend total. This puts Sinners’ domestic tally through Sunday at $122.5 million and an astounding $161.6 million globally.
Sinners has become a runaway water-cooler sensation, thanks to virtually perfect audience scores and the best reviews of filmmaker Coogler’s career. The film is broadening its appeal, with females now making up half of the audience, whereas males made up 56% of all opening weekend ticket buyers.
Disney’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith also made a strong showing, edging past The Accountant 2 for second place with an estimated $25.2 million. The film scored one of the top openings ever for a rerelease and is fueling the box office boom alongside Warners’ A Minecraft Movie.
The Star Wars rerelease comes amid the 20th anniversary of the final prequel films. Revenge of the Sith grossed $42.2 million globally, with Overseas taking in $17 million. The film’s release marks a return to the franchise for fans, who have grown more appreciative of the prequels over time.
The Accountant 2 also opened strongly, with an estimated $24.6 million and strong reviews. The film has appealed to older adults, making up 27% of all ticket buyers aged 50 or older. Its high critical and audience scores put it in competition with Sinners for male attention.
The current top five domestically are led by Sinners, followed closely by Revenge of the Sith, The Accountant 2, A Minecraft Movie, and Until Dawn.
