Airbus Snaps Up Spirit’s European Assets Amid Boeing Acquisition

European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has completed a key part of its acquisition of struggling US supplier Spirit AeroSystems, taking over loss-making European-focused activities from its rival Boeing. The deal involves the transfer of two crucial plants in North Carolina and Northern Ireland, where Spirit produces key components for Airbus planes.

Under the agreement, Airbus will acquire Spirit’s production of A220 wings in Belfast and take over the production of wing components for A320 and A350 jets in Scotland. In return, Airbus will provide non-interest bearing credit lines worth $200 million to Spirit and receive $439 million from the US planemaker.

The deal marks a significant milestone as part of Boeing’s acquisition of Spirit, which was valued at $4.7 billion last year. The transfer is expected to be completed by the end of April, with the full deal with Boeing set to close in the third quarter.
