Bill Lawrence is working on a reboot of his iconic sitcom “Scrubs” at ABC. The new iteration will be produced by 20th Television, which absorbed ABC Studios as part of a restructuring by Disney parent company. Despite this, Lawrence remains under his deal with Warner Bros. Television, allowing him to work with his former studio partners.
Lawrence’s involvement in the project comes after years since “Scrubs” ended its original run. The show originally aired on NBC and then moved to ABC for two more seasons. It followed the lives of medical interns, doctors, nurses, and hospital staff at Sacred Heart Hospital.
The new “Scrubs” will not feature Lawrence as showrunner if it goes to series. No cast members have been attached, and no deals are currently in place. The original series was praised for its unique storytelling style and remains popular even years after its conclusion.
Lawrence has discussed his decision to reboot “Scrubs” in the past, citing a desire to move on from speculation about the future of another show, “Ted Lasso.” However, some fans have expressed concerns that any reboot might not live up to the original’s standards.
The series has maintained its fan base over the years, with stars Zach Braff and Donald Faison launching a rewatch podcast together in 2020. A potential cast overhaul is reportedly being considered, with all new characters potentially hailing from India.
