Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, have died under mysterious circumstances, with an official cause of death revealed. A final autopsy by the Office of the Medical Investigator in New Mexico shows that Hackman had congestive heart failure, severe chronic hypertension, and Alzheimer’s disease.
The medical examiner found remote myocardial infarctions involving the left ventricle and a bypass graft, as well as a previous aortic valve replacement. Arakawa died due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which is transmitted from animals to humans.
However, investigators have raised suspicions about the couple’s deaths, citing unusual signs of decomposition and research into COVID-19 and flu-like symptoms in Betsy’s online search history before her death. A toxicology report found high levels of acetone in Hackman’s system, suggesting a prolonged period of fasting.
The investigation is ongoing, but officials have confirmed that no external trauma was seen on either Hackman or Arakawa, leaving many questions unanswered about the couple’s untimely deaths.
