Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has warned that a military incursion by India is imminent in the aftermath of a deadly militant attack on tourists in Kashmir. The attack killed 26 people and triggered outrage in Hindu-majority India, which accuses Pakistan of backing militancy in Kashmir.
Asif said that Pakistan has reinforced its forces to respond to the situation, but will only use nuclear weapons if “our existence is threatened”. He also called on the international community to protect the Indus Waters Treaty, a vital water-sharing pact between the two nations.
India’s foreign and defence ministries have not commented on Asif’s statement. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to pursue and punish the attackers, while Pakistan has denied any role in the attack.
The situation is escalating, with both countries taking measures against each other. India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, while Pakistan has closed its airspace to Indian airlines. China and the US have urged restraint, but the US President Donald Trump said that India and Pakistan would figure out relations between themselves.
