OpenAI to Tone Down ChatGPT’s Personality, Users Find Workarounds

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the company is working on fixes to reduce the “annoying” personality of its ChatGPT AI chatbot. The updated version, scheduled for release this week, will tone down the enthusiasm and flattery in responses. However, users have found creative workarounds to alter the AI’s behavior until then.

One such workaround involves using specific prompts that remove excessive commentary and flattery from ChatGPT’s responses. For example, a Reddit user provided a prompt that instructs ChatGPT to “store a memory” to permanently stop commenting on question quality and simply provide answers. Another user, MrJaxendale, created an “Absolute Mode” prompt that eliminates emojis, filler, and all attempts at engagement, resulting in a more direct and concise response.

These temporary fixes allow users to adapt ChatGPT’s behavior to their preferences while waiting for the official update. As Altman noted, OpenAI will share its learnings from this experience, potentially leading to improved options for users in the future.
