Google is expanding its digital ID services globally, allowing residents in more states and services to use Google Wallet. Starting soon, users will be able to save their U.S. government-issued digital IDs to Google Wallet, which can then be used for age verification, online health services, and other purposes.
In the US, residents in Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia will be able to link their digital IDs to Google Wallet. This feature is set to launch ahead of the REAL ID deadline on May 7, 2025. However, users should still carry their physical IDs for travel.
Google’s goal is to provide a verification system that protects user privacy while verifying ages across various websites and services. To achieve this, the company is integrating zero-knowledge proof technology into Google Wallet. This integration will enable fast age verification on mobile devices and apps, as well as online services that use the digital credential API.
The expansion of Google Wallet to 50 more countries is part of the company’s efforts to make identity verification more accessible globally. While the specific countries have not been disclosed, tech experts are expecting this move to further establish Google as a leader in digital ID solutions.
