Professional wrestling icon Hulk Hogan is set to become the commissioner of a new freestyle wrestling league called Real American Freestyle. The announcement was made last month, with Oklahoma State’s Wyatt Hendrickson claiming the national title at heavyweight in collegiate wrestling, an event that catapulted wrestling into the mainstream.
Hogan believes that the league can provide more earnings opportunities for wrestlers, which is lacking in the sport. He feels that the time is now to launch the league after Hendrickson’s big moment. Hogan initially worried that freestyle wrestlers might not have enough personality to sell tickets but has changed his mind after connecting with them.
Real American Freestyle events will feature single matches at eight men’s and four women’s weight classes, with the first event scheduled for August 30 in Cleveland. The league aims to provide an alternative to pro wrestling, allowing Hogan to be involved with young athletes and help guide them to become huge stars.
Hogan has secured several high-profile signings, including Kennedy Blades, an American who earned a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, for the women’s division. Zahid Valencia and Ben Askren have agreed to participate on the men’s side. Hogan is also considering Hendrickson and Steveson as possible additions.
The league has gained significant support from sponsors, including Real American Beer and Left Lane Capital. Eric Bischoff, who ran World Championship Wrestling in its heyday, will be the chief media officer. Israel Martinez, an accomplished wrestling coach, will serve as the chief operating officer.
Hogan is confident in his decision to leave pro wrestling behind and believes that this new venture will allow him to make a positive impact on young athletes. With several high-profile signings and significant support from sponsors, Real American Freestyle is poised to become a major player in the world of freestyle wrestling.
