Pope Francis’ Successor? Cardinal Parolin Fails to Impress Cardinals

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the second-highest official in the Vatican under Pope Francis, delivered a stirring homily at a Mass for 200,000 young people in St. Peter’s Square on April 27, emphasizing the importance of mercy and living up to the late pope’s legacy. However, his speech was met with disappointment from fellow cardinals who were seen as contenders to succeed Francis.

Parolin, who served as Francis’ secretary of state, spoke about the need for a collective effort to welcome the late pope’s legacy and make it part of their lives. But, according to reports, some cardinals found his style unengaging and lacking in charisma, which is seen as crucial for leading the Church.

Despite initial support from Vatican officials who see Parolin as a “quieter” version of Francis, many question whether he can be considered a viable candidate for succession. Some cardinals have expressed concerns that Parolin and Francis had grown apart over time, with the pope taking steps to limit his power in the Vatican before passing away.

Meanwhile, some younger cardinals who participated in the general congregations leading up to the conclave seem to back synodality as a top priority for the next pope. This is in contrast to Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re’s backing of Francis’ priorities during the funeral Mass, which did not include mentioning the legacy of synodality.

As the conclave approaches, it remains to be seen whether Parolin will emerge as a strong contender or if another candidate will take his place.
