The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a public service alert warning about the increasing use of generative AI in smartphone cyber attacks. The agency advises smartphone users to be cautious and take steps to mitigate these threats.
Generative AI is being used to create convincing scams, including phishing attempts, tech support scams, and banking fraud. These attacks can be difficult to distinguish from real messages, making it challenging for users to know what to do.
The FBI warns of several types of AI-generated content being used in cyber attacks:
* AI-generated photos or videos that appear to be from a real person
* AI-generated audio clips that mimic the voice of a loved one or authority figure
* AI-created videos that seem to be from a legitimate source
To protect yourself, the FBI recommends taking the following steps:
* Hang up on suspicious calls and research the contact details online
* Create a secret word or phrase with trusted contacts for emergency identification
* Never share sensitive information with unknown individuals online or over the phone
