Android 16 Beta 4 Hints at Expressive Material Design 3 UI Refresh

Google’s upcoming Android 16 operating system may feature significant visual changes, including a new “expressive” Material Design 3 language that will roll out in future quarterly updates. These design tweaks are linked to the new Material Design 3 language and include more background blur effects, redesigned status bar icons, an updated Quick Settings panel, and cleaner lock screens.

Some of these changes have been spotted in the past, while others are entirely new. The revamped status bar icons will feature color-coded battery indicators, a thicker airplane mode icon, and an iOS-like Wi-Fi signal strength icon. Users may also see one-tap toggles for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, resizable Quick Settings Tiles, and better organization for tiles.

The changes also include a potentially massive revamp of Android’s UI, making it look more like One UI and iOS. The new Material Design 3 language will be showcased at I/O or ‘The Android Show’ later in May, similar to the 2021 Material You unveiling.

Some of these updates may clean up your lock screen with a compact notification shelf, relocate clock, date, and weather information on the home screen, and introduce blurred backgrounds in various screens. Additionally, Google might give all Android 16 volume sliders a dedicated handle, unlock a new icon shape customization option, or bring brighter icons and bubbles.

Most of these changes will not be available with the initial stable release of Android 16 but may roll out in future quarterly updates.
