North Korea recently conducted the first test-firing of its new warship’s weapons system, according to state media KCNA. The “Choe Hyon-class” warship was unveiled earlier this week and was tested with cruise and anti-air missiles, as well as artillery fire.
Leader Kim Jong Un attended the test-firing and stated that the navy should accelerate nuclear armament for maritime sovereignty and national defense. Intelligence agencies in South Korea and the US closely monitored North Korea’s shipbuilding activities.
However, some experts suggest that more work may be needed before the warship can take to sea under its own propulsion. A recent satellite image showed tug boats helping to move the ship into place and back again, indicating potential issues with its propulsion system.
The “Choe Hyon-class” warship is equipped with what North Korea claims are its most powerful weapons. Kim announced that the warship will be handed over to the navy and go into service early next year. The warship’s name was chosen in honor of anti-Japanese revolutionary fighter Choe Hyon.
