Apple has issued warnings to thousands of users worldwide about potential mercenary spyware attacks targeting iPhone users. The company detected these attacks on iOS devices and notified affected users, advising them to enable Lockdown Mode and keep their iPhones updated.
According to reports, the attacks are likely to be targeted at specific individuals due to their identity or profession. Apple has confirmed that it has been sending out such notifications since 2021 and has warned against opening links or attachments from unknown senders.
The company also launched a lawsuit against NSO Group in 2021, following allegations of state-sponsored surveillance campaigns using the Pegasus spyware. Since then, users in over 150 countries have received similar warnings.
Apple’s threat notification policy states that alerts are sent multiple times per year when attacks are detected. The company emphasizes that legitimate notifications will never ask users to click links or provide sensitive information.
This comes as Apple prepares for its 20th anniversary iPhone lineup, which is expected to include a foldable iPhone and other significant design changes.
