Google is launching three new AI-powered language learning experiments aimed at helping people learn to speak a new language in a more personalized way. These experiments are still in the early stages, but they may help take on popular language learning platform Duolingo.
The first experiment, “Tiny Lesson,” uses natural language processing to provide vocabulary and grammar tips tailored to context. Users can describe situations like finding a lost passport to receive relevant phrases and suggestions for responses.
The second experiment, “Slang Hang,” aims to teach people to speak more colloquially and with local slang. It allows users to engage in realistic conversations between native speakers and learn through example dialogue.
Google’s third experiment, “Word Cam,” uses computer vision to detect objects in your surroundings and label them in the language you’re learning. This feature can help users learn new words by describing their environment.
These experiments are available via Google Labs for the following languages: Arabic, Chinese (China, Hong Kong, Taiwan), English (Australia, U.K., U.S.), French (Canada, France), German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil, Portugal), Russian, Spanish (Latin America, Spain), and Turkish.
