Hundreds Arrested in Turkey on May Day Amid Protests Against Trump Policies

Protesters across the globe marked International Workers’ Day on May 1st, with many focusing on US President Donald Trump’s policies. In Turkey, more than 200 people were arrested in Istanbul as authorities blocked access to central areas and shut down transit lines.

The arrests came as pro-democracy demonstrators protested against the jailing of opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was imprisoned in March. The country saw its largest protests in over a decade, sparked by the imprisonment.

In other parts of Asia, protesters demanded higher wages, stronger protections for local jobs and businesses. In Manila, thousands marched near the presidential palace, while in Japan, protesters called for an end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and a ceasefire in Gaza.

The global May Day celebrations also highlighted concerns over global economic uncertainty and Trump’s policies on targeting immigrants and federal workers. In Los Angeles, thousands were expected to attend one of the world’s largest May Day events, with organizers focusing on unity among workers and resistance against inequality.

As people around the world marked International Workers’ Day, they called for recognition of workers’ rights, an end to outsourcing rules, and protection for domestic workers abroad.
