A 115-year-old woman from the UK has become the oldest person in the world, according to Guinness World Records and LongeviQuest. Ethel Caterham, who lives in a care home in Surrey, reached this milestone following the death of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas.
Born on August 21, 1909, Ms Caterham said she attributes her longevity to “never arguing with anyone” and listening to others. She celebrated her 115th birthday in August 2024 with a letter from the King congratulating her on her remarkable milestone.
Ms Caterham has lived through several significant events, including World War One, the Russian Revolution, and World War Two. She even set up a nursery in Hong Kong during her time there. At 97, she continued driving until she was no longer able to.
With three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren, Ms Caterham is also one of the oldest people to survive Covid-19, according to Guinness World Records. A spokesperson for Hallmark Lakeview Luxury Care Home said: “Ethel’s strength, spirit, and wisdom are an inspiration to us all.”
