A measles outbreak has been confirmed in Denton County, Texas, with one adult patient infected and potential exposure at multiple locations on April 19-20. The correct church visited by the patient was Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church, not initially stated.
According to the Denton County Public Health Department, the infected person could have exposed others at various places during the specified time frame. Health officials recommend that unvaccinated individuals, pregnant women, and immunocompromised people contact their doctors for possible exposure and monitor symptoms for 21 days.
The affected locations include Pretty Burrito, Donut Plaza, Rangers Republic, Globe Life Field, Guitars and Growlers, Walmart, Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church, WinCo Foods, and Pho Tay Do. The health department is investigating further and may add more locations as the investigation continues.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can survive in the air for up to two hours. If exposed, up to nine out of 10 people nearby will become infected if not protected. The disease can lead to serious complications like pneumonia, blindness, brain swelling, and death.
The MMR vaccine is safe and effective in preventing measles infection and severe cases. Vaccination rates matter, as communities with high vaccination rates have a harder time spreading diseases. Unfortunately, childhood vaccination rates have declined nationwide since the pandemic, leading to an increase in measles cases.
Public health officials are hosting regular vaccination clinics and screening efforts to stop the spread of the disease. Health Connection is encouraging people to get connected to a healthier life through vaccination.
