Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sparked controversy by stating that victory over enemies is the ultimate goal in the ongoing conflict with Hamas. During the annual Independence Day International Bible Quiz, Netanyahu said that while returning hostages was a crucial objective, the primary aim is to prevail over all of Israel’s adversaries.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum responded, emphasizing that the return of captured individuals is the top priority for the Israeli government. Einav Zangauker, mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, expressed her frustration with Netanyahu’s comments, stating that she sees him prioritizing his own goals over bringing back her son, who has been held captive for over a year.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich also faced backlash for making similar remarks in April. The forum criticized Smotrich for appearing to harden his stance on captives and choosing not to save some of them from death or disappearance.
In contrast, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir emphasized the importance of defending Israel’s sovereignty and independence at all costs. He highlighted the bravery and dedication of outstanding soldiers in the IDF during an annual ceremony honoring their service.
Zamir stated that excellence is not measured by individual talent but rather by perseverance, commitment, and integrity. The ceremony aimed to recognize the contributions of soldiers who have made sacrifices for the state and its people.
