A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of northern California on Thursday, prompting evacuations and a tsunami warning that was later canceled. No deaths or injuries were reported, but thousands are without power in Humboldt County.
The earthquake hit at 10:44 a.m. Pacific Time, with its epicenter about 39 miles west of Ferndale, a sparsely populated area. Residents and business owners in the town were seen cleaning up broken items after the quake.
A tsunami warning that affected 4.7 million residents along California and Oregon coasts was canceled about 90 minutes after the earthquake. However, some areas still experienced power outages, with around 19,000 residents in Humboldt County without electricity.
Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency and signed an executive order to facilitate assistance for affected areas. The National Weather Service said there were no reports of major damage, but authorities need more time to assess the impact.
