Patreon will update its iOS app to allow creators to accept payments outside of Apple’s payment system following a recent court ruling. The planned update comes after the Epic Games v. Apple ruling, which blocked Apple from collecting fees on payments made outside of apps. According to Patreon spokesperson Adiya Taylor, this update will enable creators to receive more of their earnings without giving Apple 30 percent.
The decision follows last year’s announcement that Patreon had switched to Apple’s in-app purchase system, which applied a 30 percent fee to all new memberships purchased within the app. By updating its iOS app, Patreon aims to maintain transparency, control, and stability for creators and fans.
No timeline has been set for when the update will be rolled out, but Spotify is also planning an update in response to the ruling. The changes come as a result of the court’s decision that blocks Apple from controlling the App Store.
