Alec Baldwin’s Rust Honors Late Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins

The film Rust, starring Alec Baldwin as Harland Rust, has finally hit theaters after a nearly four-year delay due to the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021. To honor her memory, Hutchins’ name is prominently featured in the movie’s end credits.

During filming, actor Josh Hopkins revealed that the late cinematographer was a guiding light for the team, and her quote “What can we do to make this better?” inspired everyone constantly. This quote has been included in the film’s credits as a tribute to Hutchins’ dedication to making every scene better.

The movie follows Baldwin’s character, Harland Rust, as he springs a boy accused of murder from jail in 1882 Wyoming. Law enforcement and bounty hunters pursue them south. Despite the challenges posed by Hutchins’ death, the filmmakers remained committed to honoring her memory throughout production.

Hutchins’ widower Matthew Hutchins was named an executive producer on the film and filed a wrongful death suit against Baldwin, which has not been fully resolved despite a settlement in 2022. Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer who held the prop gun that killed Hutchins, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and is serving an 18-month prison sentence.

Rust is now available in select theaters and on digital platforms. The film’s dedication to honoring Halyna Hutchins serves as a testament to her legacy and commitment to excellence in filmmaking.
