Thunderbolts Leads Box Office, Surpasses Sinners in Second Weekend

Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, an MCU antihero team-up movie, is poised to top the box office this weekend with a $31.5 million opening day gross. This puts it on track for a domestic opening weekend total of $70-75 million, lower than previous MCU openings but potentially benefiting from stronger reviews and positive word-of-mouth.

In contrast, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners continued its strong performance, earning $9.5 million on Friday with a 27% fall in ticket sales compared to the previous week. This puts it on track for a $33 million third weekend.

If Sinners maintains its current pace, it is likely to surpass Captain America: Brave New World as the second-highest-grossing film at the domestic box office by mid-2025. Despite being an original, R-rated film without premium screens, Sinners is proving itself to be a box office success story for 2025.

Currently, Minecraft Movie holds the top spot domestically and Ne Zha 2 is the highest-grossing film globally, with Sinners ranking fifth worldwide.
