Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas was placed on the 10-day injured list with a ruptured left patellar tendon, according to an update Saturday. The injury occurred when Casas fell hard on his knee in the bottom of the second inning during Friday’s game against Minnesota Twins.
Casas initially didn’t feel any pain but appeared to be in shock after being worked on by trainers. Red Sox manager Alex Cora described it as a “significant knee injury” and expressed concern for Casas’ well-being, citing that he works hard and is a key player.
The 25-year-old Casas has struggled with injuries in the past, limiting him to just 63 games last season due to a left rib cage injury. He will be replaced by Romy Gonzalez at first base until his return.
Other roster moves announced Saturday include the reinstatement of left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino from the bereavement list and activation of infielder Abraham Toro from Triple-A Worcester, while right-handed pitcher Luis Guerrero was optioned to Worcester.
