Game publisher Matthew Handrahan has revealed that their recent game, Expedition 33, exceeded expectations by shipping over 1 million copies shortly after its release. The game’s success came despite being released just a couple of days after Microsoft surprised-released Oblivion Remastered.
Handrahan stated that the publisher knew Expedition 33 had a unique identity that would set it apart from other games. He also noted that the game benefited from strong momentum by the time Oblivion Remastered was launched, and this helped to attract players who were already interested in RPGs.
Research firm Ampere Analysis found that 35% of Expedition 33 players also played Oblivion Remastered, with a significant crossover between Xbox and PlayStation platforms. Xbox emerged as the top platform for both titles, but not necessarily the one with the most playtime.
Ampere’s data showed that the average playtime on Xbox was lower than on PlayStation or Steam for both games, suggesting that players may have spent more time playing on other platforms due to their longer play sessions.
