Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson outlined his vision for the city’s future growth during a state of the city address in council chambers on Thursday, flanked by 14 peers. He emphasized four key pillars: public safety, parks, potholes, and property tax relief. These pillars are essential to Dallas remaining a city of opportunity for everyone, according to Johnson.
Johnson announced plans to release the city’s “first-ever comprehensive public safety policy” in the coming months. This move comes after the passage of propositions S and U last November, which direct half of any new revenue towards police and fire pension systems and mandate increased hiring of police officers.
The propositions were passed by a large bipartisan coalition, but Moody’s Ratings downgraded the city’s debt outlook due to Proposition U, citing reduced flexibility in expenses. Johnson referenced the charter review commission’s work as a milestone despite his absence from the public effort.
In his address, Johnson emphasized the need for continued investment in first responders and maintaining focus on parks and fixing potholes. The city is expected to host major events such as the FIFA World Cup and the new Texas Stock Exchange, highlighting the importance of infrastructure development.
Johnson’s speech struck a different tone than his frequent national appearances, particularly after declaring himself a Republican last year. He called for stricter security measures at the U.S.-Mexico border and cooperation with the incoming administration to deport undocumented migrants.
The city manager and police chief positions will play crucial roles in shaping the future of Dallas’ government. Johnson emphasized the need for a city manager who prioritizes public safety, property tax relief, and efficient service delivery.
