Scottie Scheffler is tinkering with his putting once again, this time introducing a new claw grip to his short putts. At the Hero World Challenge, he debuted the grip on Thursday, hitting short putts at Albany Golf Club with the unconventional style.
Scheffler teamed up with putting coach Phil Kenyon in 2023 and worked on refining his technique, including lowering his hands on the putter grip. However, they never altered the type of grip until now. Scheffler began testing the claw grip this offseason and has found comfort with it.
“I’ve always looked for ways to improve,” Scheffler said. “This felt like a good week to try something new. I enjoyed the way it felt and saw some improvements in my stroke.”
Scheffler’s putting statistics have seen significant improvement this season, from 161st in Strokes Gained: Putting in 2023 to 76th in 2024. He has won seven times on the PGA TOUR, including an Olympic gold medal.
However, Scheffler is still looking to improve his game, particularly inside 10 feet. His effectiveness plummeted on putts between 5-15 feet, ranking 139th on tour. The new claw grip seems to be benefiting him in this area, with Scheffler making birdie putts from various distances during the first round.
By experimenting with a new grip, Scheffler aims to further enhance his already impressive putting abilities and take his game to the next level.
