Microsoft has confirmed that a small number of Windows 10 and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 systems will display the BitLocker recovery screen after installing the May 2025 security updates. The company is investigating reports of this issue, which can cause users to be locked out of their devices.
When the update fails to install, BitLocker requires a BitLocker recovery key to regain access to protected drives. However, some devices may enter an infinite loop of attempting to repair themselves, or roll back to a previously installed update.
To resolve the issue, users can retrieve their BitLocker recovery key by logging into the recovery screen portal with their Microsoft account. Alternatively, disabling certain BIOS settings like Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) or Secure Boot may help.
This is not the first time Microsoft has encountered issues with BitLocker after updating Windows. Similar problems have been reported after July 2024 and August 2022 security updates.
The root cause of this issue is currently unclear, but affected devices are from various manufacturers including Lenovo, Dell, and HP.
